HCR019: Taking Care Physically

bodybuilding-fun

In this episode, I discuss the importance of a man fulfilling the role of a provider for his family by taking care of himself physically. Here are some of the points I discuss:
  • One way I provide for my family’s future is by attempting to live as long as I possibly can. That means I have to take care of this “one tent” I have been given.

  • First, take care of the relational aspect of your physical health.

  • “Holding onto bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” (unknown)

  • “First be reconciled to your brother…” (Matthew 5:24)

  • “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18)

  • “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault…” (Matthew 18:15)

  • The Peacemaker, by Ken Sande, is an excellent resource.

  • Second, take care of the nutritional aspect of your physical health.

  • A book my wife recommends is Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon. Two good blogs on the subject are Deliciously Organic and Simple Bites.

  • Keeping a daily record of weight gain or loss is a good measure of accountability. Have a measureable (and reasonable) goal for weight loss, if that is needed.

  • Helen Andelin wrote, to train our will, we need to do this every day: Do something unpleasant. Do something hard. Demand quotas of yourself.

  • Third, take care of the physical aspect of your health.

  • “Bodily exercise profits a little…” (1 Timothy 4:8) The Bible makes a strong case for temple maintenance.

  • 1 Corinthians 9:27 teaches us that a lack of physical discipline may disqualify us in our “ministry” to others.

  • Richard Baxter’s, The Reformed Pastor.

  • To learn about the “Galloway method” of running, go to http://www.jeffgalloway.com

  • Get Started. Set a Goal. Pay the Money (for a race). Get a partner to run or exercise with, if possible.

  • My book, A Faithful Man, has this material in it in more detail.
